Q&A with Paul Perrone
Meet Paul Perrone, Founder and CEO of Perrone Robotics, a leading provider of fully autonomous vehicle systems based in Charlottesville, VA. Paul has been a pioneer in the autonomy space for over 20 years, with achievements that include leading a team in the historic 2005 DARPA Grand Challenge, serving as founding chairman of the SAE committee, which set the standards for the autonomy industry, and inventing and patenting the first general purpose robotics operating system for AVs in 2006.
Q: How long have you worked at North Fork?
Q: What is the aspect of your job that you love the most?
I most like fielding autonomous vehicles to customers and seeing them experience full autonomy on their desired routes for the first time. I take genuine pride in the many team members involved and their workmanship to bring fully autonomous driving to life in useful real-world applications.
Q: What is something you’re currently working on that excites you?
The work we’re doing to fuse our General Purpose Robotics Operating System with some very new A.I. methods is most exciting regarding the acceleration of intelligent maneuvers it offers.
Q: What experiences have equipped you for your present position?
My whole life. From being enthralled with computers and tinkering since an early age, the engineering and economics, and accounting learned throughout college, continuous learning and applied engineering and business into my professional years, starting my own businesses and running them for over 25 years, and waking up each day asking myself what I want to be doing that day - and make sure I’m generally doing or working toward that each day.
Q: Do you have a favorite restaurant in the area?
There are so many great ones in Charlottesville, but I’ve been a fan of C&O for a long time.
Q: What topic or innovation would you be interested in exploring further?
Many things. New-fangled robotics, A.I., history, and music.
